Sasshu Ju Minamoto Morikazu - Modern Satsuma Swordsmith

This katana is the work of Morikazu (守和), whose real name is Fujita Kazumasa (藤田一正), a modern swordsmith based in Satsuma-chō, Satsuma-gun, Kagoshima Prefecture. He trained under the swordsmith Moritoku Minamoto and is a member of the All Japan Swordsmiths Association.

Morikazu is well regarded in Japan for producing blades intended for practical use, particularly for iaidō and other martial disciplines. His work emphasizes functionality, balance, and reliability, making his swords suitable for regular training and cutting practice.

The blade is Shinogi-zukuri, Iori mune. The Jigane is masame hada with Gunome Midare hamon. Hataraki such as sunagashii and kinsuji can be seen within the hamon.

This example is mounted in a practical koshirae featuring a black leather tsuka wrap, offering a firm and comfortable grip. The sword has a well-balanced feel in hand, with a weight distribution that lends itself naturally to controlled handling and repeated use.

The blade is equipped with a well-cut bō-hi, which contributes to improved handling characteristics while producing a clear tachikaze during swings, a feature appreciated by practitioners for feedback during training.

Overall, this is a solid and functional modern katana, well suited for an iaidō practitioner or martial artist seeking a reliable and well-mounted blade for use.
