Mukansa Swordsmith - Modern Master of Soshuden Kawasaki Akihira

Kawasaki Akihira, born in 1968 in Oita Prefecture, is a highly respected modern Japanese swordsmith and senior member of the contemporary Nihontō world. After graduating from Meiji University, he entered the forge of the renowned Miyairi Kozaemon Yukihira in 1994 before receiving official swordsmith licensing approval from Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1999.

Since then, Akihira has received numerous major awards at the New Sword Exhibitions and other prestigious competitions, including multiple Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Awards, the Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award, and the Kanzan Award. Through his repeated success and consistently high level of workmanship, he later attained Mukansa status, one of the highest distinctions within the modern Japanese sword world.

Akihira is particularly admired for his mastery of the Sōshū tradition and is regarded by many collectors as one of the finest modern Sōshū-den smiths working today. Deeply inspired by the works of legendary Kamakura masters such as Masamune and Sadamune, his blades often display powerful nie-based workmanship and strong Sōshū influences. As of late, He is also well known for producing faithful utsushi of the famous Yamaubagiri Kunihiro sword, showcasing both his technical skill and deep appreciation for classical Japanese sword craftsmanship.

This outstanding katana by Mukansa swordsmith Kawasaki Akihira has been forged in faithful homage to the famous Yamaubagiri Kunihiro, capturing the powerful spirit and grand proportions associated with Nanbokuchō period workmanship. The blade displays an imposing sugata with a wide mihaba carried strongly from the motohaba through to the sakihaba with very little taper, culminating in a magnificent ō-kissaki. The overall impression is exceptionally bold, dynamic, and powerful, closely reflecting the dramatic shapes admired in Nanbokuchō-era masterpieces.

Constructed in shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, the blade also features a beautifully executed bō-hi which has been carved with exceptional precision and balance, further enhancing the flowing silhouette of the blade while preserving its powerful character.

Kawasaki Akihira is widely regarded as one of the foremost modern masters of the Sōshū tradition, and this work clearly demonstrates his deep admiration for legendary Kamakura masters such as Masamune and Sadamune. The blade exhibits highly active and vibrant Sōshū-den style workmanship throughout. The jigane displays a refined hada richly covered in prominent ara-nie, with coarse ji-nie spread heavily across both the ji and along the hamon. Under proper lighting, the surface comes alive with activity and depth, creating an appearance strongly reminiscent of classical Sōshū masterpieces.

The hamon is executed in a powerful undulating pattern filled with abundant hataraki. Thick nie accumulates brilliantly along the yakiba, while vivid sunagashi and inazuma traverse through the hardened edge, adding further movement and intensity to the blade. The interaction between the bright nie, dark steel surface, and various internal activities creates a highly dramatic and captivating appearance that continuously reveals new details upon closer study.

This is an exceptional modern Sōshū-den masterpiece by Kawasaki Akihira, combining masterful technical execution with a deep reverence for one of the most iconic swords in Japanese history.
