Cherry Blossom Design Tsuba (Oka-chirizu) — Edo Period, Kyō Kinkō (Kyoto Metalwork)
A finely crafted Kyō Kinkō tsuba from the Edo period, depicting an elegant cherry blossom scattering design (桜花散図).
The guard is made of shakudō with a delicate nanako-ji (fish-roe) ground, featuring high-relief carving (taka-bori) and subtle iroe (colored inlay). The rim is finished in a nawame-fukurin (rope-pattern) style, adding refined contrast and texture to the piece.
This work exemplifies the Kyoto metalwork tradition, known for its sophistication, attention to detail, and aesthetic harmony. The cherry blossom motif — a timeless symbol of transience and beauty — is rendered with remarkable sensitivity and precision.
Certified Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu (Especially Preserved Sword Fitting) by the NBTHK on December 20, 2024, affirming its exceptional quality and artistic merit.
