Beyond the famed Momoyama-period master Nobuie—counted among the era’s three great makers—there were later craftsmen signing “Nobuie” with place names such as Kaga (Kashū), Chikuzen (Chikushū), Jōshū, and Bushū. Interest in Nobuie tsuba surged in late Edo, prompting armorers and others to produce emulations. The “Akasaka” inscription likely points to a Bushū-line Nobuie. This example, with its thick, irregular silhouette, raised rim, and smooth stone-like surface, carries a dignified arabesque rendered in simple line carving, evoking the Momoyama master while revealing a fresh, distinct appeal.
This tsuba is Irregular-shaped iron tsuba with kebori (line engraving) and an uchikaeshi-mimi (turned-back rim).
