Ko-Shōami Nami-Sukashi Tsuba (古正阿弥 波透鐔)
This Ko-Shōami (Old Shōami school) iron tsuba represents the refined aesthetic sensibilities of early Shōami workmanship, likely from the late Muromachi to Momoyama period. The plate is maru-gata (round) with a robust iron ground (tetsu-ji), displaying a deep and well-forged texture characteristic of early Kyoto Shōami work.
The design features an elegant nami-sukashi (wave openwork) motif — a classic theme symbolizing vitality and the ceaseless flow of nature. The negative space of the sukashi is balanced with graceful symmetry, showing excellent control of line and proportion.
The rim is kaku-mimi ko-niku, a squared edge with a soft, rounded profile, contributing to the tsuba’s sense of quiet strength. The surface retains a rich, dark patina that speaks to its age and careful preservation.
