This is a fine Heianjō Zōgan tsuba, an important tradition of iron sword fittings associated with Kyoto and particularly recognized for the striking use of metal inlay against a dark iron ground. The tsuba features a pine tree motif, with the design extending dynamically across both sides of the plate. The warm colour of the inlay provides an attractive contrast against the naturally patinated surface of the iron.

The tsuba is of marugata, or round form, constructed from an iron plate and decorated using zōgan, or inlay. The rim is described as kaku mimi ko niku, having a squared edge with slight rounded fullness. The composition makes effective use of the exposed iron surface, allowing the pine design to stand prominently while retaining the strong and understated character associated with early iron fittings.

Pine has long been an auspicious motif in Japanese art, valued for its evergreen nature and traditionally associated with longevity, endurance and steadfastness. Here, the spreading pine branches and clustered needles form a bold decorative composition while complementing the rustic texture and deep patination of the iron plate.
